Resilient Rivers Platypus Surveys (Various Sites & Dates)

Come and spot platypus with us!

Join us at North Maroochy River or Kin Kin Creek (or both!) for our Resilient Rivers community platypus surveys, to help collect vital data on local platypus populations. Now is the perfect time to spot platypus as the males become more active, putting on their courtship displays throughout the breeding season.

This is a great FREE family friendly activity, with our volunteers lining the river and creek banks at select sites to see platypus, take photos and record data under the supervision of our ecologists. Bring the kids along to connect with nature and participate in citizen science!

You can also choose to join us afterwards for a complimentary beverage at a nearby cafe to chat with your fellow platyspotters.

Where/When:

Saturday 1st August 2026 6.00-8.30 am – North Maroochy River

Saturday 15th August 2026 6.00-8.30 am – Kin Kin Creek

What to Wear/Bring:

Closed in shoes
Water bottle
Appropriate clothing for walking by waterways and bushland

Please note that all children must be supervised by an adult.

Protecting Platypus – Caring for the Coast’s cutest creatures

This May, Sunshine Coast Council will be holding a series of library based workshops on discovering the secret life of the platypus, hosted by our Community Engagement and Education Manager, Trevor Morrison. Join us as Trevor unveils the platypus’ unique biology, behaviours, and local habitats. Learn how regional conservation projects are helping protect this iconic species. Watch footage of swimming patterns and hear about eDNA sampling investigative tracking techniques. Explore the key threats impacting their survival and mapping tools of known local sightings. Get inspired with the PlatyTracker data collection program and how it helps protect our little water friends.

Platypus Monitoring – April to May 2026

Registrations are now open for our first platypus survey season of the year!

April means the juvenile platypus have emerged from their burrows and are ready for us to come spot them splashing about.

Surveys take place during April to May at various locations in the mornings between 6:00-8:00am and evening from 5:00-7:00pm.

Learn all about where platypus live and how to find them. This is a great family friendly activity, with our volunteers surveying platypus through sightings under the supervision of our staff. Bring the kids along to connect with nature and participate in citizen science!

After each session there will also be a complimentary beverage and a chance to chat with your fellow platyspotters.

If you can’t make any of this season’s dates, don’t worry – jump on our website to become a PlatyTracker volunteer and you can conduct your own surveys when it suits you.

Habitat for Platypus – Community Planting Day

Join us for a community planting to help rehabilitate and protect valuable platypus habitats!

ECOllaboration is excited to announce a community planting event this October that is funded by our Adopt-A-Platypus program and our partnership with Unitywater. We will spend the morning planting up to 1,000 native shrubs, ground covers and trees to help rehabilitate and protect platypus habitat in Coes Creek, Burnside that has been severely impacted by the flooding and increased development in surrounding areas.

No experience is required and all ages are welcome! Morning tea will be provided 🍌🍎🥪 alongside the necessary tools and guidance.
